Toyota announced its bZ4X SUV was the best-selling electric vehicle in Japan during Q3 2025. This marks the first time Toyota has led the quarterly electric vehicle sales rankings in its domestic market.
In Q3 2025, bZ4X sales surged by 22 times compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 3,448 units. Honda's compact electric vehicle, the N-One e, ranked second with 2,732 units, followed by Nissan's compact electric vehicle, the Sakura, in third place with 1,895 units.

Nissan had held this top position for about 15 years, but Toyota's upgraded electric SUV is increasingly attracting buyers. The vehicle also features faster charging, improved interior and exterior, added features, and a lower price than its predecessor, starting at 4.8 million yen (30,600 USD).
The sales performance is attributed to Toyota's strategy of offering buyers a one-year free membership for vehicle charging services after purchase, among other measures.
The bZ4X received a partial upgrade in october 2025. Its driving range extended to a maximum of 746 km on a full charge, the longest among models released by domestic automakers, a change that was well-received by consumers.
In fact, after its initial launch in may 2022, the bZ4X did not gain traction in the domestic market until the company upgraded the product in 2025.
In contrast, the bZ4X found success in overseas markets like Europe and the US. Toyota sold over 18,000 bZ (bZ4X) units in the US in 2024 before sales decreased to 15,609 vehicles in 2025 as competition intensified in the electric vehicle market.
The 2026 Toyota bZ is currently one of the most affordable electric vehicle models in the US, with a starting price of 34,900 USD. Later this year, the Japanese automaker will introduce another affordable electric SUV, the 2026 C-HR, which is expected to start under 35,000 USD.
