Africa Global Logistics (AGL), a subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to participate in the construction of Bagamoyo port (Mbegani).
Under the memorandum, AGL will build the first three berths out of a total of 28 planned for the Bagamoyo port development project. The project is anticipated to be implemented in three phases, with phase one starting next year.
TPA has granted AGL the rights to design, build, and operate the initial three berths at Bagamoyo port. "We expect construction of the three new berths to commence in early January", Plasduce Mbossa, Director General of TPA, stated. He also called for more domestic and international investors to join the project to create a major shift for Tanzania's port activities.
The total investment for the entire Bagamoyo port project is estimated at $2.1 billion. The first three berths alone are expected to be designed and built within three years.
AGL has recently increased its participation in port expansion projects across Africa, including in the Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia, and Ivory Coast. The company stated that investing in Tanzania will help AGL expand its access to many African markets, thanks to Bagamoyo port's strategic location on the Indian Ocean.
Africa Global Logistics is a multimodal logistics provider operating in Africa.
