Despite a downturn in the late July session, many analytical groups favored a scenario where the VN-Index would soon recover as profit-taking pressure had eased. Some analysts predicted the benchmark index for the TP HCM stock exchange would reach 1,760-1,780 points this week, driven by capital flowing back into leading banking, retail, and technology stocks for short-term trading.
Indeed, the VN-Index traded above its reference level throughout the first session of August. The index briefly approached 1,770 points before settling at 1,763 points, marking a 27-point gain. This represents its highest level in three weeks. Compared to its short-term low established late last month, the index has recovered nearly 6%.
The VN30 index rose by 45 points today, reaching nearly 1,920 points.
The TP HCM stock exchange was largely positive, with 245 gainers, more than three times the number of declining stocks. The large-cap basket showed more mixed performance, with 23 stocks closing above their reference price and only five declining.
FPT showed the strongest momentum, hitting its ceiling price of 71,700 dong and contributing nearly 2 points to the overall index. This stock led in liquidity, with over 16 million units matched, totaling 1,150 billion dong, and more than 1.5 million units awaiting purchase.
Sector-wise, the securities group was the most buoyant. Most key stocks in this sector, including SSI, VPX, VIX, and VCI, gained over 2% from their reference prices.
In the banking sector, MBB briefly hit its ceiling price of 24,050 dong before narrowing its gains to 6.7%. Large-cap stocks like SHB, TCB, CTG, HDB, ACB, and VCB followed, each increasing by over 2.5%.
Real estate stocks also traded positively. Small-cap stocks such as LDG, CII, DIG, and DXG all rose by over 5%. Conversely, some leading stocks like VIC, VHM, and NLG closed below their reference prices, curbing the index's upward momentum.
The retail group also saw a strong recovery. PNJ and FRT both hit their ceiling prices today, while MWG added 4%.
Liquidity on the TP HCM stock exchange in the first session of the week was approximately 19,300 billion dong, a slight increase from late last week. Besides FPT, capital concentrated on blue-chip stocks like HPG, VIC, VHM, SHB, and SSI.
Foreign investors showed positive signs, disbursing over 3,200 billion dong, the highest level in three weeks, while selling less than 2,200 billion dong. HPG was a focal point for foreign capital, with nearly 13 million shares net bought.
According to the analytical team at Yuanta Vietnam Securities Company, given current developments, risk-tolerant investors could buy new leading stocks for T+ short-term trading, as short-term risks are largely priced in. For medium-term investors, disbursements should occur during correctional phases.
