On 23/4, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training confirmed plans to open five new schools this year, creating nearly 3,400 places for 10th-grade students.
These additions include two newly built high schools in Phu My ward and Di An, located in the Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Duong areas. The other three schools are conversions: the Di An Vocational Middle School, the former District 12 People's Committee headquarters, and the former Tan Phu People's Committee headquarters. Notably, the former District 12 People's Committee site will become an inter-level school, serving students from primary to high school.
The Department anticipates that these five new schools, strategically located in densely populated areas, will significantly ease the intense pressure on student enrollment. This year, Ho Chi Minh City faces a substantial challenge, with over 169,000 students graduating from secondary school, an increase of nearly 43,000 compared to last year. While public schools and continuing education centers are expected to meet about 80% of the demand, the remaining students may need to enroll in private institutions or vocational colleges.
The rapid construction and handover of these former headquarters are part of a 150-day emulation campaign, launched by the Chairman of the City People's Committee in early March. This initiative aims to complete 1,000 classrooms for the 2026-2027 academic year. Currently, Ho Chi Minh City requires nearly 17,500 additional classrooms to achieve its target of 300 classrooms per 10,000 school-age residents.
