The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on 15/7, with "Adolescence" receiving 13 nominations. British actor Owen Cooper garnered attention with his nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his portrayal of Jamie Miller.
Born on 5/13/2009, in Warrington, northeast England, Cooper initially aspired to be a professional footballer due to his admiration for Liverpool Football Club. Inspired by the 2012 film "The Impossible" starring Tom Holland, he decided to pursue acting, attending weekly classes at The Drama Mob in Manchester. His teacher, Alex Edge, recognized his natural improvisational skills.
In early 2024, "Adolescence" casting director Shaheen Baig sought a fresh face for the role of Jamie. Among over 500 applications, Cooper's audition tape stood out. He depicted two scenarios: Miller receiving legal counsel before a police interrogation and meeting therapist Briony Ariston (Erin Doherty). Director Philip Barantini then invited Cooper to Manchester for a live audition with actor and series creator Stephen Graham.
The series centers on 13-year-old Jamie, accused of murdering a classmate. The investigation upends his family's lives, especially his father Eddie Miller's (Stephen Graham). Cooper initially anticipated playing Ryan, the protagonist's friend, but was surprised to be cast as Jamie. He had two weeks to prepare and memorize his lines.

Following its March release, "Adolescence" topped Netflix's global English-language series chart and became the platform's second most-watched show ever, behind "Wednesday." Along with Cooper, Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters, and Erin Doherty also received Emmy nominations for their performances in the series.
Leading the Emmy nominations this year is Apple TV+'s "Severance" with 27 nominations. The science fiction series revolves around a group of employees at Lumon Industries who undergo a procedure called "severance," separating their work memories from their personal lives. "The Studio," a series about the challenges of the film industry, follows with 23 nominations.
In the comedy category, last year's winner, "Hacks," is expected to contend again, alongside other nominees like "The Bear" and "Abbott Elementary."
Under this year's rules, previous nominees or winners are ineligible for guest appearances in subsequent seasons. In the directing category, individuals and teams can submit multiple standalone programs.
According to Variety, this year's nominations included a few surprises. "White Lotus" stars like Patrick Schwarzenegger, Michelle Monaghan, Sam Nivola, and Leslie Bibb were overlooked. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were nominated despite mixed reviews for "The Last of Us" season two. Uzo Aduba's nomination for "The Residence" raised eyebrows, as Netflix halted its production. Director Martin Scorsese also received a nomination for his brief role in "The Studio."

The Emmy Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in American television, are part of the "big four" performance awards: the Oscars (film), Grammys (music), and Tonys (theater). First held in January 1949, the Emmys are an annual event, except for 2021 due to the pandemic. The 2023 ceremony was postponed to early this year due to the Hollywood writers' strike.
The 77th Emmy Awards will air live on ABC on 14/9, hosted by Nate Bargatze. According to The Hollywood Reporter, over 600 series were submitted for consideration before the nominations were announced. Last year, "Shogun," a series about feudal Japan, won four awards, including Outstanding Drama Series.
