Washing newly purchased clothes is a good habit that even those with healthy skin should maintain. New clothes can retain residual dyes, chemicals, and dust from the manufacturing and storage processes. These substances can cause skin irritation or contact dermatitis, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin, allergic predispositions, or young children. Washing new clothes at least one time before wearing them is a simple way to remove most residual chemicals and reduce the risk of skin irritation.
Research supports this practice. A 2022 study by researchers at the University Rovirai Virgili in Spain found that a quick wash with cold water could remove most of the formaldehyde remaining in clothes. Furthermore, clothes purchased online often lack hygiene, easily accumulating dust due to the packaging and shipping processes. Washing them ensures they are clean, fresh-smelling, and safe to wear. Many new garments also carry the scent of previous try-ons, which can be uncomfortable.
When washing new clothes, remember a few key tips. Avoid washing white items with dark-colored ones during the first wash to prevent unwanted dye transfer. Carefully check the care label for appropriate water temperature and whether machine drying is suitable. For delicate fabrics, lace, or underwear, use a wash bag to protect their shape. After washing, drying clothes under direct sunlight is an excellent natural method for sanitizing new garments.
