Humid weather, locally known as "nom am", is a phenomenon that typically occurs in Vietnam during late winter and early spring. The prolonged damp air often leaves floors, walls, and household items feeling constantly wet and stuffy, creating an ideal environment for bacteria, viruses, and molds to thrive.
Doctor Dang Thanh Do, a specialist in the Respiratory Department at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, states that humid weather increases the risk of respiratory illnesses such as influenza, rhinosinusitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health conditions are particularly susceptible due to weaker immune systems.
Maintain indoor humidity
Humid weather significantly raises indoor humidity, fostering the growth of mold and microorganisms. Households can use a dehumidifier or switch air conditioners to dry mode to reduce moisture. However, it is important to note that using the dry mode on an air conditioner may also lower the room temperature. An indoor humidity level of about 40-60% is considered appropriate.
Floors and glass windows are prone to condensation, so they should be wiped dry regularly to prevent mold and reduce the risk of slips. During humid periods, carpets can retain moisture, accumulating mold and potentially irritating the respiratory tract.
Keep the body warm
When venturing outdoors in humid, drizzly weather, individuals should focus on keeping their hands, feet, and neck warm. Carrying a raincoat or umbrella is advisable to avoid getting wet. If clothes become damp, change them immediately and warm the body by drinking warm water or ginger tea. Wearing wet clothes for extended periods can lead to a cold, increasing the risk of respiratory illnesses, and even pneumonia.
Doctor Do cautions against going out in cold weather after consuming alcohol. Alcoholic beverages can lower body temperature, and when combined with cold, humid conditions, this increases the risk of severe colds and pneumonia, potentially leading to dangerous health complications.
Ensure proper diet and lifestyle
Beyond keeping warm and controlling the living environment, everyone needs to maintain a nutritious diet. Eating plenty of green vegetables and fruits, along with adequate water intake, helps boost the immune system. Regular exercise and sufficient sleep also enable the body to adapt well to changing weather conditions.
If you experience symptoms such as coughing, a runny nose, fever, or a sore throat, seek medical attention for an accurate diagnosis instead of self-medicating. Individuals with chronic conditions should adhere to their prescribed treatment, take medication as directed, and attend regular follow-up appointments.
