What to drink for kidney health in summer?

Drinking filtered water, unsweetened juice, or plant-based milk can help cool down and support kidney function on hot days.

High summer temperatures increase sweating, leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Without proper rehydration, kidneys work harder to maintain internal balance, increasing the risk of kidney stone formation or impacting filtering function.

According to Master, Doctor Nguyen Quang Huy from the Department of Nephrology - Dialysis at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, summer drink choices should consider nutritional content, especially sugar, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus levels. Some beverages, if consumed improperly, can burden the kidneys, particularly in individuals with underlying health conditions. Therefore, prioritizing healthy, suitable drinks helps support kidney function and limits the risk of complications.

Filtered water

Filtered water is the simplest yet most effective choice for kidney protection. Adequate hydration helps the body eliminate waste, maintain blood circulation, and reduce the risk of stone formation. However, individual water needs vary based on physical condition, activity level, and weather; therefore, drink moderately rather than adhering to a fixed amount.

Unsweetened plant-based milk

Unsweetened plant-based milks, such as almond or coconut milk, are suitable choices for those needing to control potassium and phosphorus intake. These milks typically have lower mineral content compared to animal milks, contributing to reduced kidney burden, especially for individuals at risk of or living with kidney disease.

Cow's milk (fresh milk)

Cow's milk provides essential calcium and protein for the body, supporting bone and muscle maintenance. However, individuals with kidney issues should consume it cautiously due to its relatively high potassium and phosphorus content, which can accumulate in the body if consumed excessively.

Unsweetened juice

Some unsweetened juices, such as apple or cranberry, can support urinary tract and kidney health when consumed in moderation, thanks to their antioxidant content. However, prioritizing low-sugar or unsweetened varieties is important to limit the risk of excess sugar intake.

Doctor Huy recommends limiting soft drinks, sugary beverages, or stimulants. He also advises maintaining reasonable hydration habits that align with individual body needs and health status to support kidney function and prevent related diseases.
