Why is monitoring children's height during puberty essential?

Puberty is a critical period when children experience rapid height growth and approach their adult height, making close monitoring vital for early detection of abnormal growth signs.

Rapid height growth rate

Puberty, typically beginning around 8-13 years for girls and 9-14 years for boys, is a period of significant physical development. Children experience rapid increases in height, physique, and muscle mass, marking the transition to adulthood.

According to Parents, children grow at a relatively steady pace before puberty. However, once puberty begins, growth accelerates rapidly, often evidenced by clothes and shoes quickly becoming too small within months. Since each child develops at a different rate, parents should focus on tracking growth over time rather than just current height.

Hormones promote bone development

During puberty, hormonal changes significantly drive children's height growth. Growth hormones stimulate bone development, while increased sex hormones also contribute to this process. Consequently, children typically enter a phase of faster height gain compared to previous years.

Individual growth rates vary, depending on the onset of puberty and other factors such as nutrition, sleep, physical activity, and genetics.

This is near the final stage of height growth

According to the Times of India, puberty brings the body closer to its adult height. Towards the end of puberty, height gain slows, and bone development gradually decreases. Once bone maturation is complete, a child's height becomes almost stable. Therefore, this is a crucial time for parents to track their child's growth.

Parents can regularly measure and record their child's height to identify whether growth is rapid, slow, or plateauing. Children require a diverse diet providing sufficient energy and essential nutrients for development. Adequate sleep and physical activity are also necessary for optimal growth.

If a child experiences prolonged slow height gain, significantly falls below previous growth rates, or shows signs of abnormal puberty, parents should seek a medical evaluation.
