Two members of 'debt-ridden desperate' group arrested for robbery

Pham Minh Luc and Nguyen Thanh Binh, who met through a social media group for those "debt-ridden and desperate to take risks," planned to lure a ride-hailing driver into a secluded alley to steal property.

On 4/9, Pham Minh Luc, 26, and Nguyen Thanh Binh, 19, were arrested by the Criminal Police Department (PC02) of Ho Chi Minh City Police for robbery.

Investigations revealed that the two men met online through the "debt-ridden desperate to take risks" group. Four days prior, being short of money, they devised a plan to steal a vehicle. They agreed to book a ride-hailing motorbike and lure the driver to a secluded area. Luc obtained an unregistered SIM card from his younger sister to register a ride-hailing account and prepared a knife.

In a secluded alley on Lien Phuong Street, the two booked a ride and lay in wait. When the male driver arrived on an electric motorbike, Binh used a knife to overpower him, stealing the vehicle and phone. The driver pleaded for his phone back, and the two suspects returned it before fleeing with the motorbike.

Upon reaching an empty lot on Mai Chi Tho Street, they removed two electric motorbike batteries and abandoned the vehicle in a banana garden about one km from the crime scene. Subsequently, they were arrested by police along with the stolen property.

Recently, Ho Chi Minh City Police have dismantled several criminal operations, arresting numerous individuals connected to social media groups such as "Society of Debtors Who Like to Take Risks" or similar organizations. Police state that members of these groups typically connect online to plan and conspire to commit illegal acts for financial gain.
