A director's 9-year vow: living in a nursing home with his wife

Despite being completely healthy and having an active career, Michael surprised many by moving into a nursing home to care for his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

"I never considered myself a hero, so I am quite surprised by people's reactions", Michael, 74, said.

From 2015 to 2024, the director of an asset management consulting firm maintained a schedule: four nights each week he slept at the nursing home in Hertfordshire with his wife, spending the remaining time in London for work.

Michael and his wife, Maggie, married in 11/1996 when both were in their 40s. Maggie was then a business valuation expert. After 13 years of marriage, in 2009, Maggie began forgetting words. At her 60th birthday party, she could not speak for herself, despite once being called a "born orator". By late 2010, she was diagnosed with semantic dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The illness caused her cognitive and physical abilities to decline.

Hoping to improve his wife's condition, Michael moved to a retreat in France. However, Maggie's health continued to deteriorate. One day she said: "I have had a wonderful life, I cannot complain about anything. But I want a few more years".

In 1/2015, the couple became the first residents of a premium care facility in Hertfordshire. They used Michael's savings and insurance to cover the costs. Having no children, they dedicated all their finances to ensuring Maggie's care.

The nursing home director had warned Michael he would be "bored stiff" living there, but the reality was quite different. He established a strict schedule to balance caring for his wife and working. Daily, he spent time taking his wife for walks of several kilometers. Doctors stated that her husband's care helped Maggie live 5 additional years beyond their prognosis, preventing early immobility.

As the care facility became more crowded, staff rotation caused Maggie to show signs of panic. Rather than allowing doctors to use sedatives for his wife, Michael requested the facility assign a fixed team of 10 staff members to care for her.

Friends from Michael's rugby club often came to help Maggie practice walking. For birthdays, he hired musicians to perform and invited friends to parties. Although she lost the ability to speak, Maggie communicated with her husband through her eyes.

In 3/2024, as Maggie's health declined, medical staff suggested transferring her to a hospital. Believing an unfamiliar environment would agitate his wife, Michael insisted she remain at the facility.

On 3/4/2024, Maggie passed away. As Michael took his wife away, approximately 30 medical staff members lined the pathway to bid farewell.

"The years in the nursing home were not a time of waiting for death, but a time when marriage vows, in sickness and in health, were fulfilled", Michael said.
