Ca Mau airport is on track to reopen on 1/11, following nearly a year of temporary closure for upgrades. The project is expected to be completed by 31/10. On 31/7, Pham Thanh Lam, director of Ca Mau airport, confirmed the project is on schedule. Calibration flights for runway equipment are planned for september, ahead of the final item completion.

The upgrade project, valued at approximately 2,400 billion VND, commenced on 19/8/2025, and the airport ceased operations in late 10/2025 to facilitate construction. This key project in the southern region of the country aims to boost socio-economic development, meet national defense and security requirements, and enhance connectivity with major economic centers nationwide.

Truong Son Construction Corporation is currently undertaking package 12, focusing on completing the runway, taxiway, and apron structures. Simultaneously, auxiliary items like the drainage system, fences, and patrol roads are being implemented. To accelerate progress, the passenger terminal and other auxiliary works are seeing increased machinery and personnel, with staggered construction and overtime shifts.

Upon reopening, the Ca Mau - TP HCM route will transition to Airbus A321 aircraft, replacing the previous ATR72. The Ca Mau - Ha Noi route, which was opened in mid-2023 but later suspended, is considered to have potential, and the aviation industry continues to research suitable options for its resumption.

Lam Van Bi, vice chairman of Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee, highlighted the substantial local demand for passenger and cargo transportation. He noted that operating large aircraft to connect with TP HCM, and subsequently expanding to Ha Noi and other localities, will enhance regional connectivity, attract investment, and promote socio-economic development.

According to the 2021-2030 master plan, Ca Mau airport will achieve class 4C status, with a capacity of one million passengers and 1,000 tons of cargo per year. This classification qualifies it to receive Code C aircraft types such as: the Airbus A320, A321, or equivalents. By 2050, the projected capacity is expected to increase to 3 million passengers and 3,000 tons of cargo annually.
