Eight remains found near Dang Thuy Tram medical station

Eight sets of martyrs' remains and numerous artifacts were discovered on sim hill, about one kilometer from the medical station once led by doctor Dang Thuy Tram.

On the morning of 15/9, the Military Command of Dang Thuy Tram commune, in coordination with search forces, discovered two sets of martyrs' remains at Dong Ram group. The findings included bone fragments and a canvas sheet, a military supply used for shelter from rain and sun.

This area, formerly known as sim hill, lies approximately one kilometer east of Duc Pho Medical Station, also referred to as Bac Muoi Medical Station. This was where doctor Dang Thuy Tram served nearly 60 years ago when she volunteered for the Quang Ngai battlefield.

According to witnesses, sim hill contains about 12 graves arranged in three rows, believed to be the burial site for soldiers, police, and guerrillas who sacrificed their lives between 1968 and 1969. In the nearby Ho Sau area, residents also provided information about a martyr from the 3 Sao Vang Division, who was martyred around 1973.

In late august, after receiving this information, the commune's Military Command developed a survey and search plan. This effort is part of a 500-day-and-night campaign dedicated to repatriating martyrs' remains.

On 9/9 and 10/9, authorities located three sets of remains along with several artifacts. On 14/9, an additional three sets of remains were exhumed. The recovered artifacts include teeth, buttons, jacket zippers, and a felt hammock. With the two cases discovered this morning, the total number of remains collected in the area stands at eight.

Commune authorities stated they will expand the search based on information provided by residents. The goal is to rebury the martyrs with their comrades or hand them over to their families once their identities are confirmed.

Doctor Dang Thuy Tram, born in 1942 in Thanh Hoa, grew up in Ha Noi in a family with a medical tradition. After graduating from Ha Noi Medical University in 1966, she volunteered to serve on the southern battlefield.

In march 1967, after a four-month journey across the Truong Son range, she arrived in Zone 5 and requested to be assigned to the Duc Pho battlefield, one of the fiercest areas at that time. Her first posting was at the Nam Duc Pho pre-operative station, located inside Bong Dau Cave in Dau Mountain.

In march 1968, she was assigned to lead the Duc Pho Medical Station in Dong Ram. This facility included treatment areas for severely and lightly wounded soldiers, an operating room, trenches to avoid bombs and artillery, and a staff of about 25 medical personnel.

The remains were placed in caskets and handed over to the Commune Culture - Society Office. *Trong Quoc*

Due to increasingly intense attacks, on 28/4/1969, she and her comrades moved the medical station to Ho Bau Tay, on the slopes of Gieo Ai Mountain, about 5 kilometers through the forest from Dong Ram.

In june 1970, the medical station's location was compromised. After evacuating most of the wounded, she and two nurses remained to care for five critical patients. On the afternoon of 22/6/1970, while searching for food in the lowlands, she fell into an ambush at Nuoc Lanh Stream and was martyred at just 28 years old.

Her two diaries were preserved by former US military intelligence officer Frederic Whitehurst for 35 years before being returned to her family in 2005. The English edition, "Last Night, I Dreamed of Peace", was published in 2007 and translated into more than 20 languages. In 2006, doctor Dang Thuy Tram was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the People's Armed Forces.
