At noon on 2/4, Mr. Quyet, residing in Phuc Loc hamlet, Viet Xuyen commune (formerly part of Thach Ha district), was feeding his dog when the animal lunged, biting him multiple times and knocking him to the ground.
Dang Huu Thang, Mr. Quyet's son, said camera footage showed only his parents, both over 80 years old, were home at the time. His mother, frail due to old age, could not rescue him. Neighbors, hearing cries for help, rushed over and used sticks to drive the dog away before calling an ambulance to take Mr. Quyet to Ha Tinh Provincial General Hospital.
According to doctors, Mr. Quyet sustained severe bite wounds to his chest and neck. Despite emergency treatment, he did not survive.
After attacking Mr. Quyet, the dog returned to the house. Residents surrounded it and killed it with crowbars.
The german shepherd, weighing 45-50 kg, had been raised by Mr. Quyet since it was a pup, about four years ago. Normally, the animal was chained to a house pillar and fed at meal times.
Family members stated that on the day of the incident, the dog's neck chain had come loose. Mr. Quyet typically re-chained it after feeding.
"Sometimes the chain comes off, and the dog runs around the garden before being re-chained normally. However, I don't understand why it was so aggressive yesterday," Mr. Thang said.
Viet Xuyen Commune Police are investigating the incident.
