Tran Van Tung, a 30-year-old major, was the battalion commander of Battalion 3, 568th Infantry Regiment, Hung Yen Provincial Military Command. He hailed from Vu Thu commune, Hung Yen province.

On the morning of 12/9, while returning to his unit after completing a mission, Major Tung spotted a young man intending to jump from Cau Bo bridge in Tra Ly ward, Hung Yen province. He quickly approached the individual, attempting to persuade him to abandon his intentions.

However, as Major Tung turned to retrieve his motorcycle, the young man unexpectedly plunged into the river. Tung immediately removed his uniform and dived into the water to rescue him. Due to the strong current, both individuals were swept away.

Upon receiving the report, nearly 200 officers and soldiers, along with various vehicles, began searching along both banks of the Tra Ly river and surrounding areas. At 6:05 PM on 13/9, search teams located Major Tran Van Tung's body approximately 350 meters from Cau Bo bridge.

Major Tung's body was brought to his home in An Binh village, Vu Thu commune, for funeral arrangements. According to relatives, he had recently transferred to Battalion 3. His wife works as an accountant, and they have a daughter in 2nd grade and a 4-year-old son. Poignantly, inside the uniform he left behind before jumping into the river, rescuers found an envelope containing a commendation from his unit for his daughter's academic achievements.

Also on the evening of 13/9, search teams discovered the body of the young man who had jumped from Cau Bo bridge.
