According to Highway Traffic Police Team No. 5 of the Traffic Police Department (TPD), over the past three days, the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon - Quy Nhon - Chi Thanh - Van Phong expressway segment recorded over 20 automobiles with blown tires and engine damage, including incidents in the Gia Lai section. On 25/5, an automobile also experienced a tire blowout on the Hanoi - Hai Phong expressway.
Le Tien Anh, a truck driver who regularly uses the North-South Expressway, stated that the road surface has been extremely hot these days, with tire temperatures often reaching 52 degrees Celsius. "I want to stop to let the tires cool down, but there are not many rest stops available. I'm forced to drive, constantly worried about a blowout," he said.
Previously, truck drivers would install water tanks to spray water directly onto tires for cooling. However, Le Tien Anh explained that this method is now considered an unauthorized vehicle modification, violating technical safety standards, and carries fines ranging from 2 to 3 million dong.
From 22/5 to 27/5, northern and central Vietnam experienced an intense heatwave. This was due to a hot western low-pressure area combined with strong foehn winds. Meteorological temperatures remained at 37-39 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Actual outdoor temperatures are typically 2-4 degrees higher depending on the terrain.

The TPD analyzed that the intense heat significantly raises road surface temperatures on expressways. When vehicles travel at high speeds for extended periods, strong friction causes tire pressure to expand rapidly, increasing the risk of blowouts and loss of control. To ensure safety, the Department advises transport companies, vehicle owners, and drivers to implement preventive measures.
Specifically, when driving on an expressway, drivers should: check their tires before starting a journey, assessing wear, tire pressure, and any signs of cracks, bulges, or expiration. Drivers must not exceed the speed limit in hot weather and avoid overloading. They should also take breaks to inspect the vehicle during long trips, and if unusual vibrations are felt, quickly move to a safe location for inspection.
To enhance accident prevention, the TPD announced it will increase patrols and inspections on roads. Vehicles found not meeting technical safety standards will face penalties.
Additionally, the Department is urging relevant units to expedite the establishment of more rest stops along the North-South Expressway, especially in the central region.
