northern region drops to 0 degrees Celsius

mau Son peak, 1,500 m high, records 0 degrees Celsius, while Hanoi registers over 10 degrees Celsius, with colder temperatures expected as a cold air mass continues to descend.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that at 6h, the temperature at Mau Son (Lang Son), a 1,500 m high peak in the Northeast region, was 0 degrees. Several other high mountain peaks also recorded low temperatures: Trung Khanh (Cao Bang) at 4 degrees, and Dong Van (Tuyen Quang) and Tam Dao (Phu Tho) at 6 degrees. Ha Dong station in Hanoi registered 10 degrees Celsius.

Today marks the peak of this cold spell, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Minimum temperatures in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa are generally between 11-14 degrees. Mountainous areas will experience 8-11 degrees, with high mountain regions dropping to 5 degrees. From Nghe An to Hue, temperatures are typically 14-17 degrees Celsius.

The US-based Accuweather website forecasts that Hanoi's lowest temperatures today will be between 10-12 degrees, before rising to 13-16 degrees. High-altitude locations above 1,500 m, such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai), will see lows of 6-12 degrees Celsius.

The Northern East Sea area, including the Hoang Sa special zone, will experience winds of force 6-7, gusting to force 8-9, with sea waves 4-6 m high. In the Gulf of Tonkin, winds will be force 6, gusting to force 7-8, with waves 2-3 m high.

The area from southern Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa and the Central East Sea will experience winds of force 6, gusting to force 7-8, and waves 2-5 m high. The sea area from Lam Dong to Ca Mau, and the western part of the Southern East Sea, including the western sea area of the Truong Sa special zone, will have winds of force 6-7, gusting to force 8-9, with waves 3-5 m high.

From now until 23/1, Ha Tinh to Da Nang, and the eastern parts of provinces from Quang Ngai to Gia Lai will experience showers. High mountainous areas in the Northern provinces should be wary of frost.

Meteorological agencies warn that severe cold can impact livestock farming, hindering or damaging crop growth. Heavy rain poses a risk of flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides on slopes. Localized heavy rain can easily cause inundation in urban and industrial zones.
