Phu My Bridge gridlocked for over four hours after multi-vehicle accident

After midnight on 23/4, both lanes of Nguyen Van Quy road and the Phu My Bridge route, a key eastern gateway to Ho Chi Minh City, remained severely congested following a multi-vehicle accident involving six vehicles.

Vehicles stretched across Phu My Bridge after the accident. As a vital route connecting the southern area to Cat Lai Port, many trucks and containers were forced to stop, impacting delivery schedules.

Driver Nguyen Thanh Tu, 40, took a break while observing the situation.

Traffic backed up on Phu My Bridge on the night of 22/4 after six vehicles collided in a chain reaction, with damaged vehicles obstructing the lanes and causing prolonged congestion.

Around 8 p.m., a truck traveling from former District 7 towards My Thuy roundabout collided with the vehicle ahead while descending the bridge slope. This triggered a chain reaction involving a Porsche, another truck, and two tractor-trailers.

Driver Ly Phuc Tho, 36, transporting frozen goods from a warehouse at Tan Thuan Port to supermarkets in Thu Duc City, was scheduled to complete his deliveries by 11 p.m. However, he was forced to stop on Phu My Bridge due to the congestion.

"I had to call the client to inform them; if I wait until morning, the goods might spoil", he said.

Due to the prolonged standstill, some passenger vehicles opened their trunks, took out chairs, and sat by the roadside, making calls and waiting.

After midnight on 23/4, both lanes, from the base of Nguyen Van Quy road and the upper bridge section, experienced congestion stretching over 3 kilometers.

Traffic remained stalled on Phu My Bridge throughout the night.

The bridge, part of Ring Road 2, connects the eastern and southern parts of Ho Chi Minh City and experiences high traffic volumes of trucks and containers. Accidents frequently occur on the steep slopes at both ends of the bridge, often due to vehicles gaining speed by inertia, drivers failing to maintain safe distances, or exceeding speed limits.
