Authorities reported that the expansion project for Phu Quoc International Airport faced challenges, including difficulties in material supply and the need to ensure safe flight operations during construction. Despite these obstacles, many components are on schedule or even ahead of schedule, such as apron 1C, runway number two, and the VIP terminal.
The VIP terminal, designed to serve heads of state and high-ranking guests, has achieved 100% rough structural completion. Its roof is approximately 60% complete, with work accelerating to transition into the finishing phase.
At passenger terminal T2, the basic structure is about 85% complete. Contractors began installing the steel roof structure in early march.
Construction of runway number two presented challenges due to its weak ground foundation and its proximity to active runway number one. Currently, the cement concrete base layer is about 58% complete. High-quality concrete has been applied, with the 3,300 m runway expected to be finished by 30/6.
The runway is designed to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) 4E standards, capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350-900. Its 78 cm thick cement concrete structure can withstand wheel pressure up to 1,71 MPa and aircraft loads of up to 400 tons.

Apron construction is also progressing concurrently, with some areas already complete. This will enhance operational capacity in the coming period.
To prepare for operations, the investor partnered with Changi Airports International (Singapore) to refine operational systems, optimize passenger experience, and develop non-aviation services.
The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project commenced in 7/2025. It has a total investment of 22,000 billion dong, covers an area of over 1,050 hectares, and meets ICAO 4E standards. Key components include runway number two, international terminal T2, the VIP terminal, along with apron systems and auxiliary infrastructure. Upon completion, the airport is projected to handle 24 million passengers annually, with potential for expansion to 50 million passengers.
