Phu Quoc is addressing its rapidly growing population and increasing tourist numbers by investing in three critical infrastructure projects: the Cua Can Lake Water Plant, the Bai Bon Waste Treatment Zone, and the Bai Bon Waste-to-Energy Plant. These developments are crucial for alleviating water shortages during the dry season and managing the escalating waste volume on the island.

The Cua Can Lake Water Plant, spanning 3.6 ha in Suoi Cat neighborhood, Cua Duong commune, is designed to produce 49,500 m3 of water daily. BIWASE Corporation is investing in this project, which will utilize suspended sludge blanket reaction technology, lamella sedimentation, and a two-stage high-density polyethylene (HDPE) filtration system to ensure clean water for both residents and visitors.
In the former Ham Ninh commune, the Bai Bon Waste Treatment Zone covers 15 ha and has a capacity of 250 tons per day, with an investment of 382 billion VND. Adjacent to this, the Bai Bon Waste-to-Energy Plant, approximately 10 ha, will process 200–300 tons of waste daily, generating 4 MW of electricity and contributing to energy recovery from waste.
Le Trung Ho, Vice Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee, emphasized the significance of these projects for preparing Phu Quoc's infrastructure for APEC 2027 and fostering sustainable tourism. Investors have committed to completing all projects before 30/6/2027.
According to provincial leaders, these facilities will not only support the international event but also offer long-term solutions for environmental protection, energy supply, and water security, aligning with Phu Quoc's vision for green, modern, and friendly development. The province has assigned the Phu Quoc Economic Zone Management Board to monitor project progress, while relevant departments are tasked with facilitating procedures and accelerating site clearance to ensure timely completion.

The 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum presents a valuable opportunity to promote investment and enhance Vietnam's and the host locality's international standing. In addition to the three projects mentioned, several other developments on Phu Quoc are being expedited, including a convention and exhibition center, a multi-purpose theater, and an airport terminal, all slated for completion before APEC next year.
Phu Quoc island, spanning over 570 km2, was previously organized into two wards and 5 communes before being restructured into 51 neighborhoods. In 2025, the island welcomed over 8.1 million visitors, with international arrivals exceeding 1.8 million, generating nearly 44 trillion VND in tourism revenue. Recently, numerous charter flights from India, Poland, Mongolia, and other countries have continuously landed, helping to broaden Phu Quoc's international tourist market and diversify its visitor base.
