Request to investigate individual who erased emergency phone numbers on expressway

A truck driver is accused of using a tool to scrape off emergency assistance phone numbers on the Bung - Van Ninh expressway, in Quang Ninh commune, Quang Tri province, prompting a formal investigation request from road authorities.

On 9/5, Road Management Office II.4, part of Road Management Region II under the Vietnam Road Administration, announced it had sent a document to the Quang Tri Provincial Police Investigation Agency. The document formally requested an investigation into the act of destroying road traffic infrastructure assets after a man was caught on video erasing emergency phone numbers from an information board on the Bung - Van Ninh expressway.

The incident occurred on the morning of 3/5. According to the management unit, a truck, bearing a Quang Tri provincial license plate and "Lop auto Huan Hue" on its rear, was observed stopping on the Bung - Van Ninh expressway near an information board and traffic cones. The driver, a man, leaned out of the cabin and used a tool to scrape off the emergency phone numbers displayed on the board. He initially only partially erased the numbers before exiting the vehicle to continue scraping off additional digits. The entire act lasted over two minutes.

Road Management Office II.4 stated that these information boards and cones were installed by traffic police and the road management unit to provide crucial hotline numbers for drivers experiencing issues on the expressway. Erasing these numbers could severely hinder travelers seeking emergency assistance, potentially endangering road users.

The unit also reported that this was not an isolated incident. Previously, on 16/1, twelve stands for traffic cones and information boards along the same route were dismantled. The office believes the recent act violates regulations on protecting road traffic infrastructure, as stipulated by the Road Law 2024. They have urged authorities to investigate, address the issue, and demand compensation for the damaged property from the offender.
