At the scene, the vehicles obstructed the lanes and sustained severe damage. A white passenger car with a Hai Duong license plate and a cargo truck were among the most heavily impacted, crushed between larger vehicles. The passenger car was completely deformed, its body crumpled, and its driver died. Another cargo truck's front end was pulverized, its driver also died and was trapped in the cabin, requiring significant time for authorities to extricate.
In addition to the two fatalities, one person sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the emergency room.
Hai Phong city authorities quickly arrived to manage traffic and investigate the scene. As the crashed vehicles were large and obstructed the entire roadway, National Highway 5 heading towards Hai Phong was paralyzed, causing traffic congestion that lasted for several hours.
