The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting announced that a strong cold air mass is moving south. By noon on 7/2, it is expected to reach the northern midlands and mountainous regions, extending to the Northeast region, delta, and Northwest regions by night. The cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms from the afternoon of 7/2 through 8/2.
The meteorological agency predicts that Northern Vietnam will experience severe cold (daily average 15 degrees C or below) from 7/2 to 9/2, with some mountainous areas facing extreme cold (daily average 13 degrees C or below). Minimum temperatures are expected to range from 10-13 degrees C generally, 7-10 degrees C in mountainous areas, and below 3 degrees C in some high mountains. Frost and snow could appear in high mountainous areas during the day and night of 8/2.
Accuweather, a US-based weather forecast service, predicts Hanoi's temperature tomorrow will be 19-23 degrees C, dropping to 12-16 degrees C by Sunday. High-altitude locations above 1.500 m, such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai), will experience the coldest temperatures of this period, around 6-11 degrees C, later this week.

Central Vietnam will also feel the impact of the cold front from the afternoon of 7/2. The lowest temperatures in the North Central region are forecast to be 12-15 degrees C. From 8/2 to 9/2, areas from Nghe An to Da Nang and the eastern parts of Quang Ngai province to Gia Lai will experience thunderstorms, with locally heavy rain in some places.
Additionally, a tropical depression formed east of the Philippines has strengthened into a typhoon named Penha. At 13h today, the typhoon's center was about 200 km from the Philippine mainland, reaching level 8 with gusts up to level 10, moving westward.
Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, stated that over the next 24-48 hours, the typhoon is likely to weaken into a tropical depression before entering the East Sea and further weakening. It is not expected to affect Vietnam's mainland.
January 2026 saw four cold spells. During the period of 21/1-25/1, temperatures at Mau Son (Lang Son) dropped to minus 0,1 degrees C. The meteorological agency anticipates that cold fronts in February may be weaker than the multi-year average, but short periods of severe and extreme cold are still possible.
