The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that Typhoon Danas is the second typhoon in the East Sea (South China Sea) this year, 2025. At 4 a.m., the typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 74 km/h, a level 8 storm, with gusts reaching level 10. It was moving west-northwest at 5-10 km/h.
By 4 a.m. tomorrow, the typhoon is predicted to intensify to level 9-10, with gusts reaching level 12, while situated over the northeastern part of the East Sea. It is expected to then shift northward. By 4 a.m. on 7/7, the typhoon is forecast to reach level 10-11, with gusts of level 13, over the waters off Fujian Province (China). Both the Japanese and Hong Kong meteorological agencies agree that the typhoon is not expected to affect Vietnam's mainland. The Japanese agency predicts the typhoon's maximum winds will reach 82 km/h, while the Hong Kong observatory forecasts winds up to 120 km/h.
Due to the typhoon's influence, the northeastern part of the East Sea will experience heavy rain and strong winds of level 7, with levels 8-10 near the typhoon's center, gusting to level 12. Waves are expected to reach 3-5 meters.
Vessels operating in these waters are likely to be affected.
Since the beginning of the year, one typhoon, named Wutip, has formed in the East Sea. While it did not make landfall in Vietnam, its western circulation caused heavy and prolonged rainfall in the north-central region from 11/6 to 13/6. Rainfall totals ranged from 300-650 mm from Quang Tri to Da Nang, with some areas receiving even higher amounts, such as Nam Dong (Hue) with 768 mm. River levels rose to warning levels 2-3.
The resulting floods caused 11 deaths in Hue City, Quang Tri, and Quang Binh; flooded over 3,500 houses; and submerged approximately 88,000 hectares of crops. Dozens of locations on national and provincial highways experienced landslides and flooding. Transportation and air travel were disrupted, with over 20 flights from Da Nang canceled or delayed. The Miss Vietnam finale, scheduled for the evening of 14/6 on the Perfume River, had to be postponed.
This year, 11-13 typhoons and tropical depressions are forecast to form in the East Sea, with 5-6 potentially directly impacting the mainland. The northern region faces a high risk from July to September, while the central and southern regions are at risk from September to November.
