Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi extended birthday wishes to Barron Trump, the youngest son of US President Donald Trump, during a White House reception on the evening of 19/3. The occasion marked Takaichi's visit to the US and provided an opportunity to celebrate significant milestones.
"I would like to begin by extending my sincerest congratulations on two significant occasions", Takaichi stated before the party began.
Addressing President Trump through an interpreter, Takaichi remarked, "Donald, tomorrow is your son Barron Trump's birthday. I know he has grown into a tall and handsome young man". She added humorously, "When I look at you, I can clearly see where he inherited those good looks. Please convey my sincere birthday wishes to him". This clever compliment elicited laughter from Trump and other guests. Barron, who was not present, will turn 20 on 20/3.
Takaichi, often referred to as Japan's "Iron Lady" due to her staunch conservative views, also congratulated the US on its 250th anniversary. She stated, "The US has long been a symbol of freedom and democracy globally. On behalf of the government and people of Japan, I extend my deepest congratulations to you and all Americans".
An automotive enthusiast, the Japanese prime minister highlighted the upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix race in Washington this summer, part of the 250th US Independence Day celebrations. She enthusiastically announced, "This race will bring the roar of Chevrolet and Honda engines to the National Mall". Takaichi emphasized that the IndyCar racing series, which organizes the NTT-sponsored event, serves as a "perfect testament to the friendship between Japan and the US." She expressed hope for great success at the event.

Takaichi further announced Japan's donation of 250 cherry blossom trees to the US for the 250th anniversary. She expressed regret at not being able to bring a bouquet of cherry blossoms on this visit due to "very strict quarantine measures", illustrating her point with a gesture of holding a large bouquet.
In response, Trump lauded Takaichi as "a great friend and partner", noting their close relationship. This event marked the conclusion of Takaichi's first visit to the US since assuming office as Japan's prime minister in 10/2025. Trump had visited Takaichi in Japan last year and supported her during the general election in February.
