"During recent health checks, doctors discovered a localized nodule in my lung. This nodule was found at a very early stage and is small. Doctors believe intervention is necessary, so I have decided to undergo surgery for its removal as per their advice," Pope Leo XIV told followers in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican today.
The surgery is scheduled for the next few days. The Vatican press office stated he is expected to need about one week to recover. The office has not provided further information on the Pope's health, nor whether the nodule is suspected of being malignant.

Lung nodules are small lesions, confined to a specific area and can be benign. The American Thoracic Society states that less than 5% of lung nodules are generally identified as cancerous, though the risk increases with age, nodule size, and other factors like smoking habits.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent her wishes for the Pope's swift recovery. "I want to express my personal support and that of the Italian government for the Pope as he faces this challenge in the coming days. His calm and composed demeanor when addressing this issue reassures us," she stated.
Pope Leo XIV, 71 years old, became the head of the Vatican in 5/2025. He is relatively young compared to previous leaders of the Catholic Church. The Pope enjoys sports, including tennis, and there is no information indicating he smokes or has a history of health issues.
Pope Leo XIV maintains a busy work schedule and is expected to undertake a trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from 6-17/11.
