Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today asserted that the choice of his country's leader rests with its society and people, directly addressing former US President Donald Trump's recent call for a new Ukrainian president.
"I have great respect for President Donald Trump, but it must be said that the choice of leader will be decided by our society and our people," President Zelensky stated. He suggested that if the US desires Ukraine to hold elections, it should propose that "Russian President Vladimir Putin order a complete ceasefire for 60 days." Zelensky added, "The elections would take place during that time."

Zelensky also addressed global fuel price increases, noting that Ukraine is often blamed, but "everyone in the world understands that this stems from the war in the Middle East." He emphasized Ukraine's continued need for support from the US and Europe, expressing hope that recent disputes would not harm "solidarity" among Ukraine's allies, though he admitted this situation is "truly not simple."
Tension between US and Ukrainian leadership escalated following President Donald Trump's announcement on 9/10 that he had reached a diesel agreement with Russia. This deal exempted large quantities of Russian oil from sanctions, aiming to lower fuel prices before the November midterm elections. Zelensky opposed the move, describing it as "a gift to the Russian President."
President Trump later criticized Zelensky for attacks on Russian oil refineries, arguing that such actions exacerbated global fuel shortages, which were already affected by the Middle East conflict. Trump then stated, "It's time for Ukraine to have a new president. I suggest they find a new leader capable of reaching an agreement. Zelensky could have made many agreements, but for some reason, he never did."
