Visit by general secretary, president 'elevates vietnam-china relations to a new level'

Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung announced that the state visit by general secretary and president To Lam was a resounding success, holding immense significance in elevating Vietnam-China relations to a new level.

General Secretary and President To Lam, accompanied by his spouse and a high-level Vietnamese delegation, concluded a state visit to China from 14-17/4. The visit was at the invitation of Chinese General Secretary and President Xi Jinping and his spouse. This marked General Secretary and President To Lam's first foreign trip since the 16th National Assembly consolidated state leadership positions.

"The visit was a great success, achieving rich outcomes and holding immense significance in establishing crucial foundations for national development and elevating Vietnam-China relations to a new level," Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung stated in an interview today, according to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA).

Both sides identified the visit as the most important foreign policy event for both parties and countries in 2026. This underscores the political importance and trust placed in Vietnam-China relations within each nation's foreign policy. The minister noted that China accorded the delegation the highest, most solemn, and exceptionally warm reception, including several special courtesies.

Vietnam consistently prioritizes developing relations with China, viewing it as an objective requirement and a strategic choice within the overall foreign policy outlined by the 14th National Congress. Similarly, China consistently prioritizes developing relations with Vietnam within its neighborhood diplomacy.

The two leaders engaged in candid and extensive discussions regarding the situation of each party and country, regional and international affairs, and a comprehensive exchange on bilateral relations. They reached important common understandings and outlined major directions for promoting practical cooperation across various fields, leveraging each side's strengths.

General Secretary and President To Lam also proposed specific measures to foster close connectivity in areas such as: economy, investment, development policy, infrastructure, science and technology, education and training, people-to-people exchanges, and tourism.

The leaders of both sides agreed upon and reached important common understandings regarding the direction of developing Vietnam-China relations to a new level. Vietnam and China will enhance the connectivity of their two economies; promote practical measures to develop trade and investment; and cooperate closely in researching and initiating the construction of railway projects, while facilitating customs clearance for exports between the two countries.

The two countries also emphasized active coordination and mutual support on the international stage, creating important foundations and favorable conditions for consolidating a peaceful and stable environment for each nation.

"Key projects, including railways, expressways, logistics, and smart border gates, will be prioritized for rapid implementation. This will facilitate the flow of goods and investment, and ensure energy security," the minister stated.
