MG ZS to feature plug-in hybrid variant

The B-segment crossover will be MG's first model to utilize its next-generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology, with a projected launch in 2027.

MG states this system will deliver a significant leap in performance, achieving "optimal efficiency comparable to a pure electric vehicle". The new technology will debut on the ZS in 2027, before being applied to other models.

The manufacturer stated that this semi-solid-state battery system represents a major advancement over the current generation. Fei Jibing, chief engineer for powertrain control, revealed that the new hybrid gearbox achieves "over 40% efficiency for 90% of operating time", an improvement of 6% compared to the previous generation MG HS model.

The MG ZS, the first model to feature PHEV+ technology, will offer an all-wheel drive option and a significant power boost, enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 6 seconds. With its strong traction, the vehicle takes only 3,5 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h.

However, David Allison, product planning director for MG UK, stated that the company has no plans to upgrade the suspension or chassis. The new ZS is also unlikely to carry the high-performance "XPower" badge, meaning the vehicle will not receive hardware tweaks or larger braking systems.

MG has not yet announced detailed battery specifications or the pure electric driving range. However, Jibing shared with Auto Express that PHEV+ technology reduces noise, vibration, and harshness by 5 dB in pure electric mode, thanks to motor disconnect technology.

The company asserts that this technology provides superior fuel efficiency across all speed ranges, while comprehensively addressing the concerns of PHEV users. The goal is to eliminate "range anxiety" by maintaining maximum power even when the battery is low or in extremely cold weather conditions.

It is expected that two larger models, the HS and S9, will also soon be upgraded to this improved "SolidCore X" plug-in hybrid system.

Additionally, MG will introduce a 3,6 kWh battery pack and a new gearbox for Hybrid+ (HEV) versions, replacing the current 1,83 kWh battery found in the MG3, ZS, and HS. This configuration optimizes fuel consumption and extends the electric driving range in urban areas.

The new HEV system is expected to launch concurrently with the PHEV+ version in 2027. The price of both engine configurations may increase slightly, pushing the starting price of the compact MG3 Hybrid+ model to over 20.000 GBP (approximately 26.000 USD).
