The accident occurred around 14h30 near the intersection of Tierra Rejada road and Madera, a busy shopping center area. Aerial images of the scene showed the Tesla still on the pavement.
Police stated that the white Tesla veered off the road and struck an elderly woman who was walking on the sidewalk outside the restaurant. The vehicle then crashed into the building, distorting chairs and tables and scattering broken glass across the pavement.
The car also narrowly missed two customers who had stood up and left just minutes before the collision. When emergency responders arrived, the elderly victim was found trapped underneath the vehicle.
According to police, the Tesla driver, a 64-year-old woman, was carrying four minor passengers. The driver sustained a wrist injury, and she, along with one of the minors, was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. It is currently unclear whether the Tesla driver was under the influence of substances or if the autonomous driving assistance system was activated.
Two other Tesla accidents also occurred in June, amid ongoing lawsuits involving the American electric car manufacturer's autonomous driving assistance system. One incident took place in Texas on the afternoon of 19/6, when a Model 3 crashed through a house wall, killing a 76-year-old woman. The driver claimed the car was in self-driving mode.
The other incident occurred on 21/6 when a Tesla collided with a pole at the Tanger Outlets shopping center in Hershey. Fortunately, no one was injured in this event.
