5 benefits of coffee for the liver

Coffee contains caffeine, antioxidants, and various bioactive compounds that can support liver health, especially when consumed unsweetened and in moderation.

The liver continuously processes nutrients and maintains metabolism. Many beverages, including coffee, can support this organ due to their bioactive compounds.

Reducing the risk of liver fibrosis

Fibrosis occurs when the liver sustains repeated damage, leading to the formation and accumulation of scar tissue. If it continues, this condition can progress to cirrhosis.

Caffeine in coffee is believed to interact with adenosine receptors, thereby influencing collagen production and scar tissue formation in the liver. Additionally, certain coffee compounds may affect signals related to inflammation and fibrosis.

Reducing inflammation and liver cell damage

Coffee contains many bioactive compounds, including chlorogenic acid, caffeine, and diterpenes, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These substances can help limit molecules that damage cells and signals that promote inflammatory responses in the liver.

According to Eatingwell, regular coffee drinkers tend to have lower levels of the liver enzymes ALT and AST. These are indicators commonly used to assess liver cell damage.

May reduce fatty liver disease

Fatty liver is linked to metabolic dysfunction and is currently known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), occurring when excessive fat accumulates in the liver.

WebMD also lists coffee among beverages that may benefit individuals with fatty liver disease, with consuming about two to three cups daily potentially helping to reduce the risk of scar tissue formation in the liver.

This does not mean that individuals with fatty liver disease can use coffee as a substitute for treatment. Weight management, diet, exercise, and limiting alcohol remain important factors in disease control.

Supporting the gut microbiome

The liver and gut are closely linked through the gut-liver axis. When the microbiome is imbalanced, the intestinal barrier can become more permeable, allowing bacteria and inflammatory substances to enter the bloodstream and reach the liver, contributing to inflammation and oxidative stress.

Regular coffee consumption may beneficially alter the composition of the gut microbiome and support the intestinal protective barrier. These effects are believed to limit the amount of bacteria and inflammatory substances reaching the liver.

May reduce the risk of certain liver diseases

According to Verywell Health, regular coffee consumption has also been linked to a lower risk of chronic liver disease. However, these findings primarily indicate a correlation between coffee drinking habits and disease risk; they do not mean coffee is a method for preventing or treating these conditions.

How to consume coffee for liver benefits

Not all types of coffee offer the same benefits. Prioritize pure coffee with little or no added sugar, as excessive sugar can increase the risk of fatty liver disease.

Types of coffee such as ground, instant, or decaf (which removes at least 97% of caffeine content) have all been noted to offer liver health benefits. These benefits are more pronounced in individuals who drink two to three cups daily, but healthy adults should generally not exceed 400 mg of caffeine (equivalent to four cups). However, coffee cannot replace a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol consumption.
