Can cancer patients eat ginger jam?

I enjoy ginger jam during Tet. Can cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, like me, consume this dish? (Quy Hien, 34 years old)

Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy often experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and indigestion. Ginger jam, a traditional treat during the Tet holiday, may offer several health benefits for these patients.

Ginger can help reduce nausea. It contains two compounds, gingerol and shogaol, which directly interact with serotonin and dopamine receptors in the digestive tract, thereby calming the vomit reflex.

Patients can suck on a small piece of ginger jam when encountering food odors or before and after meals. This practice helps to lessen the urge to vomit and stimulates the palate. Consuming two to four slices of ginger jam before or during travel by bus, plane, or train can also alleviate motion sickness symptoms such as dizziness and nausea.

Ginger also helps improve indigestion. Its warming properties can soothe the stomach, prevent bloating, and enhance appetite. For patients experiencing a bitter taste, loss of taste, or bloating due to reduced bowel motility—common side effects of cancer—ginger jam can stimulate salivary glands, digestive enzymes, and gastric juices.

Furthermore, ginger possesses anti-inflammatory properties and can soothe mucous membranes. The natural anti-inflammatory compound gingerol helps alleviate pain and arthritis. Ginger also acts as an antispasmodic on smooth muscles in the intestinal wall, which can reduce the dull abdominal pain often experienced by patients on long-term medication. During the cold weather of the Tet season, ginger is beneficial for preventing colds and easing symptoms like coughs, sore throats, and nasal congestion.

It is advisable to consume only two to four thin slices of ginger jam to prevent stomach irritation. Opt for varieties with less sugar to avoid inflammation and mitigate any potential impact on blood sugar levels.
