The unusual surgery took place on 26/12/2025 at SR Kalla Memorial Hospital in Jaipur city. The male patient, a resident of Bhilwara district, Rajasthan state, was admitted in critical condition with severe abdominal pain.
Dr. Tanmay Pareek, the gastroenterologist treating the patient, stated that initial imaging results astonished the entire medical team. The patient's stomach was filled with hard, unusually shaped objects, resembling a junk bin.

The medical team initially opted for endoscopy to remove the foreign objects. However, this approach quickly failed as the sharp objects had deeply penetrated the stomach wall, posing a high risk of organ perforation and sepsis. Recognizing the urgency, doctors proceeded with open surgery.
After more than two hours of intense surgery, the surgical team successfully removed two iron wrenches and seven intact toothbrushes. Dr. Pareek diagnosed the patient with a mild mental disorder, leading to the ingestion of non-food items, a condition known as Pica syndrome. This dangerous habit emerged about one month before hospitalization, with the foreign objects gradually accumulating and causing severe damage to the digestive system.
Hospital Director Mukesh Kalla described this as a complex case, requiring accurate diagnosis and timely surgical intervention to save the patient's life. Currently, the young man's health is stable, with vital signs at safe levels. The patient remains hospitalized for monitoring of surgical wound recovery and psychological treatment.
Medical professionals advise families to closely observe their relatives. If they detect unusual eating habits or abnormal psychological manifestations, early medical examination is crucial to prevent regrettable consequences.
