Dr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh, from the Sports Medicine Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in TP HCM, states that normal daily routines are often disrupted during the Tet holiday. People tend to eat more and move less, which can lead to uncontrolled weight gain.
To maintain physical activity and expend energy, helping to stay in shape during Tet, individuals can leverage daily activities. Tasks such as cleaning the house, cooking, and reorganizing belongings effectively burn calories. Additionally, increasing walking or cycling for New Year visits, opting for stairs instead of elevators, and participating in outdoor family activities are beneficial.
After meals rich in protein and fat, a gentle walk of 20-30 minutes can aid digestion and reduce bloating. It is advisable to limit prolonged sitting while watching tivi or using a phone; instead, stand up and move around every 60 minutes.
During the holidays, you can incorporate equipment-free exercises that do not require a gym. Dedicate 30 minutes each morning to activities like jogging in place, jump rope, yoga, aerobics, or simple exercises such as squats, planks, and push-ups. These exercises not only help expend energy but also promote a refreshed state of mind. Physical activity further enhances digestion, lessening feelings of bloating and fatigue after meals high in protein and fat.

Dr. Vinh advises that in addition to maintaining physical activity, adults should avoid overeating at any single meal. It is important to eat on time, slowly, and include plenty of green vegetables to aid digestion and prevent bloating or internal heat. Prioritize whole-grain carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole-wheat bread, and oats, and consider eating sweet potatoes, corn, and beans during Tet. Reduce high-calorie items like banh chung, banh tet, candies, and soft drinks.
Maintaining habits such as drinking enough water, getting sufficient sleep, avoiding late nights, and refraining from late-night eating during Tet helps limit fat accumulation and maintain a stable weight.
