Doctor Liu Lijun, Head of Department at Peking University First Hospital, shared this information at a press conference held by China's National Health Commission on 10/2. He affirmed that the folk belief of using animal kidneys to treat illnesses or boost vitality lacks scientific basis.
According to the expert, animal kidneys contain nutrients like protein. However, when ingested, the digestive system breaks them down into basic amino acids to nourish the body, rather than directly "repairing" human kidneys as commonly believed. This food offers no specific nourishment for the corresponding organ.

Frequent consumption places a significant burden on the excretory system. Animal kidneys have a record-high purine concentration, similar to seafood and concentrated broths. Excess purine leads to uric acid production, the primary cause of gout. When uric acid crystallizes in the kidneys, it causes stones and exacerbates existing damage.
The dish's preparation method also poses a risk. Popular dishes like grilled kidneys are often heavily marinated with salt. Salt causes water retention, leading to a surge in blood pressure. This high blood pressure rapidly erodes the filtering function of the glomeruli.
A diet rich in protein from offal strains individuals with weakened kidneys. If the body cannot adequately excrete metabolic waste from protein, toxins accumulate, posing a danger.
Doctor Liu emphasized that kidney protection is not about "what to eat to nourish" but "eating less to reduce burden". A bland, low-purine diet prioritizing moderate high-quality protein is the most sustainable solution for maintaining organ health.
