Tan Son Nhat airport gateway congested on day before Tet

Thousands of cars and motorbikes crowded the roads leading to Tan Son Nhat, while the airport's interior was packed with people waiting for check-in procedures to return home for Tet on the afternoon of 11/2.

Traffic around Tan Son Nhat Airport experienced severe congestion, with cars and motorbikes backed up for nearly 2 km on Hoang Van Thu street, extending from the section near the overpass and park to Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street.

The surge in vehicles was attributed to Tan Son Nhat Airport entering its peak operational period for travel during the Binh Ngo Tet 2026 holiday.

Vehicles inched forward on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street towards Tan Son Nhat Airport, specifically at the end of Truong Son street. The access points to terminals T1 and T2 were consistently congested.

International terminal T2 saw a sharp increase in passengers as many Vietnamese returned home from abroad for Tet. Meanwhile, terminal T1 primarily handled Vietjet flights, which account for nearly 40% of the international passenger market share. Terminal T3, located on the Cong Hoa - Tran Quoc Hoan road, experienced less congestion.

Simultaneously, the gateway to and from the international terminal leading to Truong Son street also experienced localized congestion. Hundreds of cars and motorbikes queued for nearly 2 km, waiting for about 15-20 minutes to move. Despite traffic lights, traffic police had to be on the street to direct traffic here.

Passengers jostled through the jammed traffic to enter the airport.

Inside terminal T1, hundreds of passengers queued for check-in. Today, Tan Son Nhat Airport is expected to handle about 1,063 flights, including 963 passenger flights carrying over 163,000 people. This marks an increase of about 43,000 passengers compared to a normal day and a 10% rise from the same period last year. Passengers were mainly concentrated in domestic terminals T1 and T3, totaling nearly 104,000 people, most of whom were traveling north. International terminal T2 also experienced high passenger volume with nearly 57,000 people, with both arrivals and departures totaling approximately 30,000 movements. Thanh Tung - Giang Anh
