Storms and whirlwinds blow off roofs, fell trees, injuring passersby in Lam Dong, Dak Lak

Storms and whirlwinds on the afternoon of 20/8 blew off dozens of house roofs and felled trees, injuring passersby in Lam Dong, Dak Lak.

On 20/8, severe storms swept through Lam Dong and Dak Lak provinces, causing widespread damage. In Lam Dong, around 4:30 PM, heavy rain and whirlwinds struck Ward 1 Bao Loc, Ward 2 Bao Loc, Ward 3 Bao Loc, and B'Lao. Strong winds ripped roofs from dozens of homes and uprooted numerous trees, which subsequently fell onto roads.

Ward 2 Bao Loc and Ward 3 Bao Loc experienced the most significant impact. Nguyen Dinh Hiep, a resident on Blaosire street, described the storm lasting nearly one hour. He noted, "The corrugated iron roof continuously rattled, then it was blown off" by the relentless wind gusts.

Following the storm, local authorities and community groups quickly mobilized to assist affected residents. Police, military personnel, militia, and youth union members from the wards are currently helping residents relocate belongings, repair damaged roofs, clear fallen trees, and assess the overall damage.

On the same afternoon in Lam Dong, a large tree beside National Highway 20, near Chuoi pass in Da Huoai commune, broke and fell during the heavy rain. The tree's canopy struck a moving box truck, causing minor dents but no injuries to the occupants.

Madagui traffic police, part of the Lam Dong provincial police traffic division, responded by diverting traffic, warning vehicles, and deploying chainsaws and cranes to clear the obstruction. Within 20 minutes, one lane was cleared. About 40 minutes later, National Highway 20 through Chuoi pass was fully reopened to two-way traffic.

In Dak Lak, around 5 PM, strong storms and winds swept through Buon Ma Thuot ward. This caused numerous trees on streets such as Phan Chu Trinh - Tran Cao Van, Hoang Dieu - Mac Thi Buoi, Pham Ngu Lao, and Le Duan to break branches, uproot, and fall onto the roads.

On Dat Ly street, an ancient mahogany tree toppled, striking a motorcyclist. Residents immediately transported the injured victim to the emergency room.

Fallen branches and tree trunks blocked several streets, disrupting traffic. The wind also tore away signboards and damaged display cabinets belonging to local businesses. Residents reported the sudden onset of strong winds, accompanied by heavy rain.
