Flash flood sweeps away tourists taking photos in Thailand

A group of tourists were taking photos on rocks at Mae Sa waterfall in Chiang Mai province when a sudden flash flood swept some of them into the water.

The incident took place around 16:20 on 15/8 at Mae Sa waterfall, located within Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in Chiang Mai province. Park management stated that the tourists disregarded warning signs and entered a restricted area to photograph themselves on rocks in the stream.

Footage captured water from upstream rapidly surging, engulfing the tourists. The strong current swept away some individuals, while others panicked and sought help. Park rangers quickly intervened, guiding the group to safety. Fortunately, they sustained only minor scratches and received immediate first aid.

Arttie Martin, a witness, recounted his near miss. He initially planned to join the group in the stream but reconsidered after hearing a warning whistle. Moments later, water suddenly cascaded down the mountain. "Everything really happened in just a few seconds", Martin stated, explaining he posted the video to alert other tourists to flash flood dangers, particularly during the rainy season.

Martin emphasized that waterfall visitors must adhere to warning signs and staff guidance. He also advised regularly observing water color, level, and flow speed, as conditions can change rapidly.

Following the incident, water levels at the waterfall receded, but authorities kept the area closed for safety.

The northern thailand meteorological center issued a warning for Chiang Mai and several northern provinces, anticipating heavy to very heavy rain from 18-21/8. This forecast is due to a monsoon trough merging with a strong southwest monsoon over the andaman sea and the gulf of thailand. Officials urged residents to exercise caution against flash floods in mountainous, riverside, and low-lying areas. They also advised avoiding roads prone to flooding, given that thailand is currently in its rainy season, which typically runs from may to october.
