Honeymooners die in helicopter crash

A helicopter spun out of control before crashing, killing a British honeymooning couple instantly.

On the evening of august 17, a helicopter carrying newlywed British couple Marie Ebert and Alexander Cromie, who were on their honeymoon, crashed just before its scheduled landing on Sifnos island. Greek police confirmed the two tourists and pilot Giorgos Raikos, 53, a former air force officer, died in the accident.

Authorities reported a "strange noise" emanating from the Bell 206 helicopter, the model rented by the couple, just before the crash. A source indicated potential engine failure.

Surveillance camera footage revealed the helicopter spinning out of control as it approached the landing pad, subsequently catching fire and engulfing the scene in dense smoke.

Authorities plan further examinations on all three bodies to determine the cause of death. On the evening of august 18, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) suspended operations for all Bell 206 helicopters until further notice.

Private helicopter rental services are increasingly popular in Greece, with tourists frequently chartering them for travel between islands in the Ionian and Aegean seas.

Sifnos is located approximately 195 kilometers southeast of Athens, requiring several hours of travel by ferry. Many describe the island as a "hidden gem," maintaining a more tranquil atmosphere compared to Mykonos or Santorini, which have seen high tourist numbers in recent years.
