Bus plunges into river, 16 dead in Bangladesh

While boarding a ferry, a passenger bus plunged straight into a river in central Bangladesh, killing at least 16 people and leaving many missing.

The accident occurred on 25/3 at the Dauladia pier in Bangladesh's central Rajbari district. Rescue teams quickly began operations, salvaging the bus using a crane and recovering 14 bodies from inside. A fire department representative stated that divers had earlier located the bodies of two women in their 50s or 60s, bringing the total confirmed fatalities to 16.

Around 11 passengers managed to swim to shore or were rescued from the water. Officials estimate the bus, which was traveling to Dhaka, carried between 40 and 50 passengers, including several children. Most were returning to the capital after a holiday period.

Many passengers were reportedly members of the same family. Initial investigations indicate the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to plunge into the river. The vehicle sank to a depth of over 24 meters.

This tragedy follows another recent accident in Bangladesh. On 22/3, at least 12 people died and 26 were injured in a collision between a bus and a train in Comilla district, approximately 100 km from Dhaka.
