Most severely injured victim in Phu Quoc canoe accident recovers

The most critically injured survivor of a canoe accident in Phu Quoc has made a remarkable recovery after 12 days of intensive care at Cho Ray Hospital and is now set to return to India, accompanied by a medical professional.

On 25/7, Doctor of Medicine (level 2) Tran Thanh Linh, Head of the Emergency Resuscitation Department at Cho Ray Hospital, confirmed the patient has made an almost complete recovery following intensive treatment. The patient can now walk short distances, eat, and perform personal activities independently, with stable heart rate and blood pressure readings. According to Dr. Linh, the patient is fit to return to India on a commercial flight for long-term health monitoring. To ensure safety throughout the journey, Cho Ray Hospital will send a doctor to accompany and monitor the patient's condition.

Preparing for their journey home, the patient expressed disbelief at their recovery given the ordeal. "I feel that my health recovery today is a miracle, and I thank the dedicated team of doctors and nurses at Cho Ray Hospital for their treatment and care," the patient stated.

This patient was the most critically injured survivor of the canoe accident that capsized on 11/7 in Phu Quoc, carrying a group of Indian tourists. The incident resulted in 15 fatalities and 21 rescues. Upon admission in Phu Quoc, the patient suffered severe respiratory failure due to drowning, multi-trauma shock, cerebral hemorrhage, and acute myocardial infarction caused by coronary artery occlusion. Cho Ray Hospital promptly dispatched a resuscitation and interventional cardiology team to Phu Quoc. They performed emergency coronary artery revascularization on-site, implanted a temporary pacemaker, and then airlifted the patient to TP HCM for ongoing treatment.

Other less severe cases from the accident, who received treatment in Phu Quoc, have already been discharged.

On 24/7, Doctor of Medicine (level 2) Pham Thanh Viet, Director of Cho Ray Hospital, presented commendations to 8 doctors and nurses. These individuals, from the Emergency Resuscitation, Emergency, Interventional Cardiology, Neurosurgery, and Neurology departments, were recognized for their critical role in treating the patient.
