Should you take supplements to thicken the uterine lining before embryo transfer?

Many people have advised me to take supplements to thicken the uterine lining before embryo transfer. Is this true, and how should I supplement? (Thanh Ha, TP HCM)

Answer:

Currently, there is no scientific evidence indicating that any dietary supplement or tonic can directly promote the development or thickening of the uterine lining. The growth of the lining primarily depends on the hormone estrogen, which is secreted by developing ovarian follicles or supplemented with medication as part of a doctor's treatment protocol.

Therefore, during the uterine lining preparation phase, you should not arbitrarily use products advertised to "thicken the uterine lining" or "increase pregnancy rates". The most important aspect is to strictly follow your treating doctor's instructions to ensure the uterine lining reaches an optimal state for embryo implantation.

You should focus on preparing your body for the upcoming pregnancy. Maintain light physical activity for about 15-30 minutes daily, eat a balanced diet with diverse foods, get enough sleep, and maintain a comfortable mental state to create favorable conditions for pregnancy.

Women preparing for embryo transfer may supplement with vitamins and minerals as directed by their doctor. Folic acid is the most crucial micronutrient, requiring a minimum daily intake of 400 mcg, ideally starting about three months before conception to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the fetus.

Iron is also an essential mineral, with a dose of about 30 mg daily, to prevent iron-deficiency anemia. Depending on your nutritional status and doctor's prescription, you may also supplement with vitamin D, E, K, B vitamins, vitamin C, along with micronutrients such as zinc, copper, iodine, and selenium. You should consult your doctor when choosing products.

At the Center for Reproductive Assistance, Tam Anh General Hospital system (IVF Tam Anh), doctors comprehensively evaluate the patient's hormonal status and uterine lining, then develop an individualized protocol for each patient. Doctors closely monitor the uterine lining's response, adjusting medication as needed to select the appropriate embryo transfer time, optimizing the chances of implantation and pregnancy.
