During the investigation, Duy confessed to planning with Linh and the two minors to rob property on deserted roads. On the afternoon of 3/3, after a drinking session at Linh's wife's house, the four attached fake license plates to two motorbikes. They then traveled over 300 km from Vinh Hau commune to Ba Den mountain in Tay Ninh province. The following evening, they spotted a couple by Dau Tieng lake. Duy and Linh used knives to accost the couple while their accomplices stole a phone. Later, on a deserted road near Dai Dong intersection on provincial road 784, the group forced a woman riding alone to stop, threatening her with a knife. They stole her handbag, which contained money and a phone. Continuing to provincial road 786 in Phuoc Chi commune, Duy stabbed a man in the abdomen with a knife and stole his bag. After these crimes, the group changed their license plates and returned to Ca Mau.
According to authorities, defendant Tai, residing in Vinh Hau commune, purchased a stolen phone for 3.5 million VND, despite knowing it was stolen. Duy met Nhanh, recounted the robberies, and gave him a stolen phone to keep.
