Car carrying dozens of battery packs catches fire at Da Nang gas station

Authorities confirm the car that erupted in flames at a Petrolimex gas station, resulting in two fatalities, was transporting over 20 battery packs and multiple accumulators.

On the morning of 2/5, the Da Nang City Police Criminal Investigation Department provided initial information regarding the car fire incident that occurred in Thang Dien commune. During the examination, authorities discovered the vehicle contained approximately 20-25 24V battery packs along with 9 fully charged toy electric vehicle batteries.

The fire occurred around 15h23 on 1/5 at Petrolimex gas station No. 90 in Tu Cam village, Thang Dien commune. Vo Nguyen Duy An, 24, was driving the car, transporting Tran Huu Tri, 17, and Duong Anh Kiet, 16, into the area of fuel pump number 1. Driver An opened the door and exited the vehicle, while Tri and Kiet remained in the back seat.

According to camera footage, when the car exploded and flames erupted from the rear trunk, the driver rushed out, while the two teenagers were still in the back seat. Photo: Security camera

As the attendant was preparing to refuel the car, the rear trunk unexpectedly exploded. Fierce flames rapidly engulfed the vehicle. According to the gas station's camera footage, driver An appeared panicked, ran around the front of the car, and took out his phone to make a call.

Gas station staff and local residents used on-site fire extinguishers to douse the flames. After approximately 15 minutes, the fire was brought under control, but the car's trunk and rear half were incinerated. One fuel pump was also severely damaged.

According to a witness who directly participated in extinguishing the fire, when the car caught fire, there was no information about anyone being inside, so everyone focused on putting out the fire from the outside. After the flames were controlled, authorities inspected the car and discovered the bodies of the two teenagers.
