Why hot weather can cause hormonal imbalance

Hot or erratic weather can lead the body to secrete more stress hormones and reduce thyroid hormone production, causing menstrual disorders and hot flashes.

According to pharmacist Do Xuan Hoa from the Medical Information Center at Tam Anh General Hospital, TP HCM, hot weather activates the adrenal glands in the brain to increase cortisol secretion. Prolonged high cortisol levels can inhibit the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, reducing the production of estrogen and progesterone. These two hormones play a crucial role in regulating body temperature, which is why hot flashes may occur more frequently.

Hormonal disruptions also cause irregular menstruation or worsen premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms. Many women may experience early, late, or altered menstrual flow during erratic weather conditions.

During certain stages of the menstrual cycle, especially the second half, a woman's natural body temperature often slightly increases, making the body more sensitive to humid heat. Hot weather intensifies the activity of oil and sweat glands. This, combined with elevated body temperature, can easily lead to hormonal acne on the chin and jawline.

Sultry summer nights or unpredictable weather often lead to restlessness. Disrupted sleep directly affects the secretion rhythm of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), two hormones critical for ovulation and female hormone production. Sleep deprivation also further increases cortisol, creating a vicious cycle that contributes to irritability and discomfort.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that help control metabolism. In hot weather, the thyroid gland reduces hormone production to slow down metabolism. This can disrupt daily routines and eating habits. Many people experience a loss of appetite, reduced physical activity, sluggishness, and a lack of energy.

Within the body, the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis plays a commanding role, producing the main hormones for a woman's body. The stability of these hormones regulates biological functions such as body temperature, physiological function, and alleviates discomfort during pre-menopause and menopause.

Currently, Lepidium Meyenii, an herb originating from South America, can support the body's natural production and stabilization of the three key hormones: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, according to the body's needs, helping to maintain body temperature.

To cool down, women should drink enough water and replenish electrolytes, prioritizing filtered water, coconut water, and cooling herbal teas (such as chamomile, artichoke), while limiting sugary carbonated drinks. Eating meals on time and supplementing with foods rich in omega-3, vitamin C, and magnesium can support the adrenal glands in reducing stress. Women should maintain a cool (25-26 degrees Celsius), well-ventilated sleeping environment to ensure deep, quality sleep.
